The weather has changed and we're all feeling the chill - but if you're not quite ready to wear a winter coat, our Editor, Isabel Kelly, has found some perfect transitional coats to take you through the season.
Autumn / Winter fashion is here and that can only mean one thing. The trench coat. There’s a reason they never go out of style - get it right and this is one wardrobe staple that you want to wear again and again. It’s ideal for layered outfits and isn’t too cumbersome to carry around should you get too warm. As it’s such a classic it looks great with casual and dressed-up looks – with the added benefit of being waterproof (although always check the label, you get the odd one that is purely for looks!).
I personally like to size up with my coats as wear them over numerous layers, and if you select a trench with a belt it’s easy enough to cinch that in at the waist to create an hourglass silhouette.
It’s one item I would suggest will take you through Autumn into Winter (until it gets really cold and you want something more like a duvet!) and then perfect for the mixed weather in Spring again.
I’ve sourced a few here to give you some ideas, but it’s also worth looking at some of my favourite brands for trench coats which include Massimo Dutti, Uniqlo, Mango, Max Mara, Arket, Cos and ASOS.
The first is from Monki, £75, and is a great ‘classic’ trench – the long length is incredibly flattering, and this piece would work well over dresses too.

If you’re prefer something other than a traditional trench colour, this khaki option from ASOS, £65, is a beautiful choice. Again, the length is great, with simple unfussy details and the option to belt this to cinch you in at the waist.

This investment trench from Karen Millen, £419.30, is leather and would last for years – I love this pale blue, however they also have this in classic cream and tan.

Don't rule out shopping in the men's department for items like coats. Cos have a beautiful pale grey trench option, now in their sale £67.50 (was £135).

Once you find a style and colour you love, you will dig your trench coat out season after season as it’s such a wardrobe classic!
